Switching to Diabeter

We understand that switching to Diabeter can feel quite overwhelming. Fortunately, many people experience the transition positively.

People with type 1 diabetes who are currently being treated by another diabetes team can register via our website.

If you or your child is under 21 years of age, one of our advisors will contact you by phone. People over 21 will receive a detailed email with more information about the registration process.

For everyone, after reading the information on our website or after a phone call, you can decide whether you want to start treatment at Diabeter.

If you choose to switch, you’ll need to ask your general practitioner or treating physician to send us a referral letter. Once we receive the referral and have availability, we’ll contact you to schedule an appointment.

Please note: Diabeter has waiting times. You will remain under the care of your current diabetes team until your first appointment at Diabeter. So, don’t end that relationship prematurely.

There are no waiting times for people with a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes who are not yet receiving treatment elsewhere.

Treatment at Diabeter

Diabeter is here to help—whether you’ve just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes or have been living with it for some time. Our care is reimbursed by all health insurers in the Netherlands.

We’re happy to share information on our website about the treatment options and medical services available at Diabeter.

START AT DIABETER IMMEDIATELY AFTER DIAGNOSIS

If you’ve been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, you can begin treatment at Diabeter right away—without any waiting time. We have diabetes centers in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Deventer, and Groningen. For Amsterdam, please visit www.diabetercentrumamsterdam.nl.

To receive treatment at Diabeter, your general practitioner or hospital physician must write a referral letter. With this referral, we can begin treatment quickly after diagnosis. This applies to both children and adults with type 1 diabetes.

ADDITIONAL ADVICE FROM DIABETER: SECOND OPINION

You can also come to Diabeter for a second opinion—additional advice on your current treatment. This may be helpful if your current diabetes team is unable to resolve a specific issue. During the second opinion, you remain under the care of your existing diabetes team. At Diabeter, we work with you on a clearly defined goal within a short, agreed-upon timeframe.

For a second opinion, we require a referral letter with a specific request for help from your current treatment team or your GP.

WHEN DO WE ADVISE AGAINST SWITCHING TO DIABETER?

Diabeter is er voor iedereen met type 1 diabetes en Mody-diabetes. In sommige gevallen is het echter niet mogelijk om je de juiste zorg te bieden.

Diabeter is here for everyone with type 1 diabetes and MODY diabetes. However, in some cases, we may not be able to provide the appropriate care.

Pregnancy
Diabeter does not provide treatment during pregnancy. If you are already receiving care at Diabeter and become pregnant, we will refer you to a general hospital in close consultation.
After your baby is born, you are of course welcome to return to Diabeter. If you were not yet under our care, you can switch after your pregnancy.

Complications and/or Additional Conditions
Some people with type 1 diabetes are treated in hospitals by multiple specialists. If you regularly see other specialists (in addition to your internist or pediatrician) or require frequent hospital admissions, it may not be suitable for Diabeter to take over your care.
Diabeter does treat conditions directly related to type 1 diabetes, such as thyroid issues.

Not sure if switching to Diabeter is right for you?
Feel free to fill out the registration form anyway.

The Diabeter team made the application process smooth and reassuring. Thanks to their guidance, I felt supported throughout the entire journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I expect an appointment at Diabeter?

We have a waiting period for people with type 1 diabetes who are currently being treated elsewhere. The waiting time varies by Diabeter location and age group. You can find the current waiting times in the table below (last updated March 2025):

Location Internal Medicine Waiting Time Pediatrics Waiting Time
Rotterdam 200 days 200 days
Eindhoven 180 days 180 days
Deventer 120 days 60 days
Groningen 180 days 120 days

Your position on the waiting list is typically determined by the date you register with Diabeter. In rare cases, medical urgency may allow someone to be treated sooner.

Please note: Diabeter does have waiting times. You will remain under the care of your current diabetes team until your first appointment at Diabeter. So, do not end that relationship prematurely.

There are no waiting times for individuals with a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes who are not yet receiving treatment elsewhere.

Who can receive treatment at Diabeter?

At Diabeter, we treat people with type 1 diabetes and monogenic diabetes (MODY). This includes both children and adults.
We do not treat people with type 2 diabetes.

Is your care reimbursed by my health insurance?

Yes, we provide insured care and have contracts with all health insurers. We therefore charge the costs for you or your child directly to your health insurer. For more information, see health insurance.

What if I don’t live near one of Diabeter’s diabetes centers?

Many people who are treated at Diabeter live farther away. For them, the specialized type 1 diabetes care at Diabeter is worth the longer travel time for an appointment.

Many appointments at Diabeter can also be done by phone or online. This means you don’t have to come to a Diabeter location for those. How often this is possible is always discussed with the treatment team and depends on your personal situation.

We have diabetes centers in Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Deventer, and Groningen. For Amsterdam, we kindly refer you to www.diabetercentrumamsterdam.nl

Can I keep my insulin pump and glucose sensor if I switch to Diabeter?

You always switch with the pump and sensor you’re currently using. During your treatment with us, you’ll discuss with your care team whether this is still the preferred treatment.

What if I have an urgent problem with my diabetes in the evening, at night, or during the weekend?

In a life-threatening situation: always call 112 immediately.

For people receiving treatment at Diabeter, there is an Emergency Line. We are available 24 hours a day, all year round via 088 - 280 72 77

When you call this number, you will always speak directly with a doctor or diabetes nurse. We consider it very important to provide immediate help when needed.

What if I need to go to the hospital because of diabetes?

It is almost never necessary for someone receiving treatment at Diabeter to go to the hospital due to diabetes-related problems. We provide clear guidance on managing diabetes, and our care providers are always reachable via the Emergency Line. Most treatments at Diabeter are outpatient: this means you come to a Diabeter location for appointments and then return home.

If hospitalization is needed, it can be arranged as usual. This is done through a standard referral, which Diabeter will handle for you. We also have special agreements with many hospitals near our diabetes centers.

Can my blood and urine be tested at Diabeter?

At Diabeter, we can have your blood and urine tested in the laboratory when it concerns diabetes—for example, during your annual check-up. We can measure HbA1c ourselves at all our locations, and the result is available within 6 minutes. This is done during your appointment at one of our treatment centers, and you receive the result directly from your doctor or diabetes nurse. So, you don’t need to make a separate appointment or go elsewhere for this.

Can my eyes be examined at Diabeter?

Type 1 diabetes can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eye. These vessels are located in the retina at the back of the eye. When these vessels are damaged due to diabetes, it’s called diabetic retinopathy. At Diabeter, we consider it important to prevent eye damage. That’s why we regularly check the eyes of people with type 1 diabetes. We do this by taking photos of the retina.

This examination is performed at all Diabeter locations using a special device. This means you don’t need to visit an ophthalmologist specifically for the eye check. If the device detects abnormalities, the photos are further examined by a specialist from Ksyos. At our diabetes centers in Eindhoven, Deventer, and Groningen, a Ksyos specialist conducts this examination. The specialist comes to the location on a fixed day and performs the checks for multiple people in a row.

If it turns out you have diabetic retinopathy, you will need to see an ophthalmologist. They can treat the damage to the eye. You will then remain under the care of that ophthalmologist. This also applies to eye problems that are not related to diabetes.
